Mr Bruce Vaughan
I am looking forward to the trip to Tioman Island with the ISS grade 11 students. I have been on several ISS WWW trips in earlier years to Cambodia, the Philippines and Lombok. I enjoy helping students learn about global issues through genuine experiences. This increases their enthusiasm for school subjects and opens up new areas of interest for them to explore. Besides strong friendships between each other, the WWW grade 11 trip enables students to conveniently complete the "Group 4 Project", a core IB component. I am hoping students will gain ideas, useful experiences, friendships, as well as a renewed enthusiasm for scientific inquiry and compassion for humans in need and the environment.

I have been to various high school trips and most recent one was WWW-Sedili Malaysia last year. I enjoy being with students on the trips, observing them to be happily engaged, show their concern and care for people, and environment in a different world (when they are outside their daily routines). I love when they connect Science to real-life learning, get motivated and broaden their horizons of thinking. IBDP Group-4 project mirrors the work of real scientists and students from all science subjects are going to get an opportunity to work collaboratively. I am looking forward to have fun with our Grade-11 students and keen to see our young scientists exploring Tiomen Islands.

I’ve taken students on art-focused trips to numerous cities in the USA, as well as to Italy (Florence, Rome, Pisa, Ravenna) and Spain (Madrid, Córdoba, Cádiz). My prior trips with ISS include learning experiences in Indonesia, Thailand, and a previous trip focused on student scuba-diving certification, to Tioman, Malaysia, the site of our G11 trip this year. I’m excited to return to Tioman! I hope our Group 4 data collection will demonstrate that floating blobs of plastic trash are less prolific than they were during our trip several years ago. It will also be interesting to learn how Tioman is protecting its marine life, most especially the turtle nesting areas and the coral reefs, which were showing visible signs of deterioration on our previous trip.

Week Without Walls is the best way for students to engage in experiential learning. The opportunities for students to connect with other cultures, other ideas, other points of view, other physical environments and each other for sustained periods of time can not be provided in the traditional classroom setting. The grade 11 trip to Tioman will give students a chance to apply their knowledge of concepts in science and humanities to real world issues related to economics, food production, biodiversity, ecology and sustainable development. As an Environmental Systems and Societies teacher I look forward to facilitating the connections students will make with ideas, people and nature while we are in Malaysia.

This is my first time to join Week Without Walls. Although this marks my baptism of fire to the extra curricular trips outside the country, I have heard a lot of stories about the previous experiences with WWW through the lens of participants. I believe that the many benefits of experiential learning is sum up by Benjamin Franklin: Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn. I am l
looking forward to having meaningful learning sessions with all the
participants!

As a Diploma teacher at ISS I look forward to using the Tioman WWW trip as an opportunity to get to know my new Grade 11 students even better. I am particularly keen to take part in the Artificial Reef Building Workshop and to enjoy the snorkelling activities. At the end of the trip, I hope all Grade 11 students will make meaningful connections between the Science curriculum and being responsible Global Citizens.
